The National park is at 228 kilometers far from the city of Santa Rosa, main city of province La Pampa and at 120 of General Acha town.
Created in 1977, with a surface of 9,901 hectares, the National Park Lihué Calel is located in the South center of province La Pampa, a landscape of mountainous areas of volcanic origin that nothing has to do with the surrounding semi-arid evenness of La Pampa. The first inhabitants of this zone called Lihué Calel, that means "jagged mountain ranges of the life".
The objective of its creation is to protect the mountain system, the flora and the fauna, representative of the mount, some of them endemic species, like the local daisy. The shrubs are the dominant vegetation. Some animals, like puma, find a refuge there.
Dry tracks, are the channels of the rivers and water courses that today do not exist and that sometimes crossed this atmosphere. The highest point is the hill of the Scientific Society with 590 meters of height.
Lihué Calel is one of the parks with greater amount of archaeological rest in Argentina. These jagged mountain ranges were one of the last refuges of the natives when the Campaign of the Desert advanced for the conquest of territories by order of Julio Roca, Argentine president at that time. Thus it is testified the cave paintings.
This site was privileged by the Indigenous for having potable water and wild life. Known like "the way the Chileans", it was site of resupply for the rakefuls of the Indigenus named “Pampas” that urged on cattle of Carhué (southwestern of Buenos Aires) until the mountain range of Neuquén.
