Created in 1983, with a surface of 1.300.000 hectares (that increases on rainy times), the Natural Reserve Ibera , occupies an important portion of the North-center of the Corrientes Province.

A system made up of matting, bathed, dammed, streams, rivers and lagoons, in where the biodiversity of the reserve is dazzling, a refuge of important wild life in the declared world Natural Patrimony of the Humanity.
The Matting of the Iberá act regulating the amount of water of the zone that is drained in Parana through the Corrientes river.
It takes its name from the Iberá lagoon, a word that in guaraní could be translated like "shining waters", epicenter of reserve and one of the front doors. This is one of the seven enormous lagoons of this system that load only on rainy times, because no river ends at the Iberá. The water level stays because it drains towards the rivers Corrientes and Miriñay. Their margins are occupied by leafy woods, mainly of espinillo, a very perfumed tree of flowers.
COLONY PELLEGRINI, of about five hundred inhabitants, is located to its borders, 120 kilometers of Mercedes city.

The Moon lagoon -Laguna de Luna- and Iberá one are most extensive, with 78 and 53 km2, respectively. Both of them has species on the way to extinction, among them: aguará guazú (in guaraní, "great fox"), the red deer of marshes and the tiny fox of river.
Between the fauna of the place, the most numerous groups are the reptiles (jacares, turtles) and the birds (storks, herons, caraos, gallaretas, ducks). Birds with 300 species in which chajá stands out. Between the species of fishes: tarariras, dorado, sábalos, bogas and rayas.
With respect to the vegetation, the matting are formed by lagoons with great amount of floating plants (like camalotes, repollitos de aguas and irupés) and great islands that float to the drift called tiling. Into this kind of vegetation predominates: pirí, junco, paja brava, etc.
