San Telmo is the district that conserves the old Buenos Aires. This district, that was vicinity of mulatos is characterized by houses of the colonial time, large houses of marinates and old bricks, narrow paths, some spotted corners without ochava and streets.
In San Telmo you can visit:
Coronel Manuel Dorrego park - National Historical Place: (between the streets Defensa, Bethlem, A. Aieta and Humberto 1°) Old place of carts, leater, market of supply, and today the oldest square of the city after the Plaza de Mayo. Here the town of Buenos Aires reaffirmed its independence (declared in 1816 in Tucumán). Perhaps, the most attractive to the tourist it is the famous Fair of the Dorrego square, a fair of antiques (with more than 270 positions of sale) that occupies a reduced space of the park since 1970, all Sundays between 10 and 17Hs, organized by the Museum of the City.
Market of San Telmo:(access by the streets Defense, Carlos Calvo, Bolivar and Estados Unidos) Their projection in 1897, by the architect Juan Buschiazzo, would turn this market (that occupies a quarter of apple) in the only survivor present of their style.
First House of Coin (Primer Casa de Moneda):( 630 Defense, street ) Between 1881 and 1944 worked there this institution that was created in 1875 when the PESO settled down as national currency. At the beginning it coined only metal coins but in 1897 the printing of bills was ordered. The first director of the institution, engineer Eduardo Castile, was also, the author of the architectonic work. In its lands it was the Hospital del Rey, founded by Juan de Garay at the beginning of 1600. In the present is branch of the Belgrano Institute and the Institute of Historical Studies of the Army lodging diverse exhibitions.
Branch of File of the Army (Sede de Archivo del Ejército): (677Balcarce street) Located in the same block of the House of Currency, this space was acquired in 1889 to build an annex for the bill printing machines, and thus it was until 1914. Actualy is it host of the File of the Army. This building reflects the English functional architecture in the beginnings of the XX century.
Penitentiary Museum Antonio Ballvé - National Historical Monument : ( 378 Humberto 1º street) Museum that exhibits elements of the Argentine prison system, like for example retorts of cells and crafts made by the prisoners. It was inaugurated in 1980 in the old house of spiritual exercises and established jesuíta school in 1740, that conserved Nuestra Señora del Carmen, church. Later it was hospital of the betlehemita order and jail of women from 1822 to 1978.
Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires: (350 San Juan, avenue) The museum lodges in an old industrial tobacco building, of beginnings of the XX century.
Museum of the Cinema Pablo C. Ducrós Hicken: (1220 Defensa, street) receives its name in tribute to one of the first investigators of the cinema.
Doctor Guillermo Rawson School:(1343 Humerto 1º, street ) At the beginning of XIX century , they based in this place the order of the betlehemitas. Between 1858 and 1887 the first Medicine School of the country worked, whose building was improved later in 1926.
Minimum House: is denominated this, since its front has only 5 meters wide, and as consequence it conforms the narrower house of the city of Buenos Aires. It comprised of a greater house constructed between in the ends of XVIII century and principles of the XIX, but we know a little about its origin.
The Old warehouse: (corner of Balcarce and Independencia) Old house dedicated to tango spectacles since 1968. Denominated by the famous singer Edmundo Rivero, who lead this house until his death, inspired by verses of the tango Sentimiento Gaucho composed by Francisco and Rafael Canaro (1924). Space from the beginnings of century XIX when the British hospital worked, Then was a warehouse and the Volga restaurant. The peculiar thing is the hoops in which the horses tied themselves, visible on the facade of the avenue Independence. The Old Warehouse is one of the corners without ochava of San Telmo.
Monument of sing to the Work (Small square Colonel Manuel Olazábal, in Independencia and Paseo Colón avenue) Bronze work, in where their 14 human figures drag a rock symbolizing the effort of the work. Made by the argentine escultor Rogelio Yrurtia and inaugurated in 1927.
Faculty of Engineering: (850 Paseo Colón avenue) Architectonic work of the State between 1946 and 1955. It was host of the Ex- Foundation Maria Eva Duarte de Perón.
Gallery of French’s Lot: (1066 Defensa street) It occupies the estate of the house where the patriotic Domingo French lived. Nowadays it’s a place dedicated to commercial premises.
Passage of the Defense : ( 1179 Defensa street ) Old residence of the Ezeiza family in 1880, turned commercial stroll from 1981.
El Zanjón: (755 Defensa street ) Big rambling house of the XIX century,that conserves its original style and its tunnels.
House of Juan Carlos Castagnino : (1016 Balcarce street ) House of the painter constructed by the end of XVIII century and recovered by the artist in the decade of 1960 for his atelier. This pink house, at the moment lodges temporarias exhibitions of art.
House of poet Esteban de Luca- National Historical Monument: (383 Carlos Calvo street ) House of the military man, journalist from XVIII century. Incorporated to the Regiment of Patricios he participates in the English invasions, was director of the factory of arms, collaborated in the pages of the Newspaper and founded the Literary Society. Returning from Brazil in diplomatic mission, his boat was shipwrecked in the Río de la Plata and died in the attempt to arrive at the coast. At the moment, his house is a restaurant.
Church of San Pedro Telmo- National Historical Monument: ( 1340 San Pedro street).Old church of the city, projected by jesuit architect Andrés Blanqui and constructed in 1734. The front of this jesuit work is the image of saint guardian of the men of sea whose relics keep in the temple, brought of the cathedral of Tuy, in Spain. In its interior stands out the púlpito ordered by Manuel Belgrano in 1805, the symphonic tubular organ, old images and oils of XVIII century.
Dane Church: (257 Carlos Calvo street) Luteran temple made by architects Rönnow and Bigaard and inaugurated in 1931. In its interior it lodges a scale model of the ship school of the Copenhagen Dane Navy that was shipwrecked in the decade of 1920 after pass Buenos Aires.
Russian Orthodox church of the Santísima Trinidad: (315 Brasil street) Original project of architect Mihail Probrazensky and inaugurated in 1904. It lodges pieces of great value donated by the zar Nicholas II.
Lezama Park: (between streets Defensa, Brasil, Paseo Colon and Martín Garcia) It lodges the monument Don Pedro de Mendoza, made by Carlos Oliva Navarro, and the National Historical Museum, that works in that outside house of Don Gregorio Lezama.
