In the north of Buenos Aires city, located in Río de la Plata, the Martin Garcia Island was stage of military actions and place of political figures confinement like Hipólito Hirigoyen, Juan Domingo Perón and Arturo Frondizi.
It has 185 hectares.
The subsoil of the island is made of crystalline rocks from the bulk of Brasilia (old geologic structure) and was used to pave some Buenos Aires´s streets. Although is a continental Island, their coasts are from Delta with a fluvial sedimentation, in fact it is located in front of Parana´s Delta.
The Martin Garcia Island was sighted for first time in 1516 during Juan Diaz Solis expedition.
The name of the Island was the name of a crew member who died on board and was buried there too. During the XVII and XVIII centuries, sailors disembarked there for their hours of leisure.
In 1973 was declared Provincial Natural Reserve for conservation of the native fauna and flora.
It conserves an important patrimony with a prolonged history. It also offers an interesting ecoturistics proposals.
In the Island you can visit:
Historical Museum : It is located in the estate which occupied one old bar, and was created by the islanders in collaboration with the Navy.
House destined to doctors and the Rubén Dario's house: After it worked as a jail, the island became lazareto between 1868 and 1915. Where victims of contagious diseases were shutted in, later it was residence of the poet.
The lighthouse: Installed in 1881, by the president Julio Roca. It worked until 1927, alerting the navigators about
the presence of this island.
Ruins of the old naval prison : It worked between 1765 and 1957.
